Sulla vicenda dell'America's Cup

E' notizia di questi giorni che il defender dell'Americas Cup, Teamo Oracle e altri tre challenger hanno votato per cambiare le regole di stazza della 35a coppa per ridurre i costi, al di là della notizia e delle motivazioni, ciò che mi è piaciuto e che sento sia il caso di riportare qui è uno stralcio della dichiarazione di Patrizio Bertelli fondatore del team:

Disable Internet Explorer Java ActiveX check

Per permettere l'esecuzione di versioni java obsolete che sono compatibili con applicazioni di terze parti come Unicredit banking eseguire i seguenti passi:

reg add "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\VersionManager" /v DownloadVersionList /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f

del “%LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\VersionManager\versionlist.xml”

Il secondo passaggio conviene farlo partendo da “%LOCALAPPDATA%

UAC control and dll registration.

Recently I installed on a user pc an application with many Ocx and Dll registrations, after that for user friendliness, I disabled the UAC. This office does not have IT staff so the user should install software without help. I know this is not a goog behaviour but nothing else should be done, the user has to be autonomous.

So after disabling UAC the software installed stopped to work, dll or ocs missing. I presume this is due to the virtual directories where uac store files when install a software. So I want to try this:

Disable only the VirtualStore feature not the entire UAC. A possibly better choice if you feel this feature is not important to the way you use your computer. This can be done by going to Local Security Policy -> Local Policies -> Security Options and Disabling User Account Control: Virtualize file and registry write failures to per-user locations "

Another test is to make the application trusted, this should be done by assign full access right to users group at application directory level.

use MDT to install application

Six months are gone after I started using MDT, I used version 2010 an 2012 and finally deployed more or less 100 pc in more or less two weeks.
It takes longer to copy and configure user's profile thant to install the new os and the new hardware.

Anyway the most interesting part is the application install.

After you have installed all the staff you can setup a task just to install some application, prepare the silent installation of the application you need and configure accordingly the task.

Then on the client (no matter if this was a new one with other oem OS) open a command window, connect to the mdt share and launch LiteTouch.wsf, select the proper application then exit.

net use \\server\mdt$  
cscript \\server\mdt\Scripts\LiteTouch.WSF

DHCP Authiorization troubleshoting Windows 2003/2008

Nowadays often DHCP has to be migrated on new servers, sometimes this should be tricky most times for a wrong procedure so here some steps:

1. dump existing dhcp configuration on source server:
open elevated command prompt and type 
netsh dhcp server \\ export [ip scope]

2. unauthorize server on source server
3. stop dhcp server service and disable it from autostart
4. install new role in the server and do not configure.
5. import configuration in new server:
netsh dhcp server %computername% import
6. start server 
7. authorize
8. make service DHCP auto start


if some troubles come up, like "unable to autorize" or "server already authorized" you should retry the authorization with this useful window:

Outlook Favorites missing and troubleshooting

If your outlook 2007 or 2010 do not show all the favorites try to reset the functionality
outlook.exe /resetnavpane

Else look at this file:
c:\Users\\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Outlook\outlook.xml

There's should be some strange character inside.
