Network interface E1000E vs VMXNet3 on VMWare with Windows 2008 and 2012

I like to post this two interesting articles about the type of Virtual nic better to use in windows 2008 and 2012 on a virtualized enviroment on vmware:

http://rickardnobel.se/vmxnet3-vs-e1000e-and-e1000-part-1/

http://rickardnobel.se/vmxnet3-vs-e1000e-and-e1000-part-2/

On the second part of article became clear that is better to use VMXNet3 nic on W2012 servers.

Internet Explorer Group Policy Preference

policy>user configuration>Administrative templates>Windows Components>Internet Explorer>

Prevent Running First Run Wizard

e
Turn Off the security Setting Check Feature

Windows Print server Migration, how to migrate without user action.

Often is needed to migrate printer services from one server to another, nowadays server changes from x86 to 64 bit version so the use of prtinter migration tools could not be applied everytime, least but not las I prefer to do it manually to have full control of migration steps and to avoid user implication.
So this is the steps that i usually use.

First of all take a list of the printers that have to be migrated, sometimes happens that old queues are not deleted.
Control the printer ip port, sharename and driver type name and version used.

Create the new server and be sure to install printer add ons.

Create TCP/IP printer ports via script on new server:
Then open a terminal console with administrative rights and go to the folder:
windows 2003: c:\windows\system32
windows 2008/2012C:\Windows\System32\Printing_Admin_Scripts\en-US

cscript prnport.vbs -a -r IP_ -h -o raw -n 9100

I suggest to create a little batch file or just use notepad++ to create as mutch rows as needed and then paste in console window.

Then create the new printers with printmanament.msc using administrator rights. Be sure to use the same sharename as old server.
This operation should be also automated in various way, but this will be another story.

Then you have just to change on clients the registry key:
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Port

For example I have this local port:

\\spoolsrv\hp4014

In the registry I have a REG_SZ key with that name, it is enough to change it and restart spooler service.

If this post was youseful to you please leve a message.

Disable Internet Explorer Java ActiveX check

reg add "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\VersionManager" /v DownloadVersionList /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f

Windows 8 and DFS troubleshooting

I had a problem on a W8 workstation and a dfs share, the user has also activated the offline file function.
The user still get on file list and dir only the directory available offline.

After some test I have found this solution:

1. Add this registry key
HKLM:\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanWorkstation\Parameters
New DWORD
Name RequireSecureNegotiate
Value 0

As per http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2686098

2.
Disable offline files
add this registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Csc\Parameters
Name FormatDatabase
New REG_DWORD
Value 1

Rboot
Enable Oflline file

As per  http://pickettsproblems.wordpress.com/2013/07/10/windows-domain-dfs-namespace-access-denied-using-fqdn-access-allowed-using-server-unc-paths-directly/

DNS Resolution

Happens on only some client that's the DNS name resolution fail.
On a first troubleshoointg the ping command pointing the server name fails, but nslookup not and do not fail also the ping with FQDN.

Both the nic configuration and os settings in the "workstation name" label window has the append dns suffix value.

After a long search I found this interesting articles:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc755882%28v=ws.10%29.aspx

http://blogs.technet.com/b/networking/archive/2009/04/16/dns-client-name-resolution-behavior-in-windows-vista-vs-windows-xp.aspx

The second one has something that should be the correct resolution:

Modify this registry key

This registry entry works for both Windows XP and Windows Vista
HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows NT\DNSClient\AppendToMultiLabelName
Type = DWORD

Data:
  • 0 (Do not Append Suffix)
  • 1 (Append suffix)
Else a Group Policy should be used but only from Windows Vista:

Group Policy location (for Windows Vista only) - (run gpedit.msc):
Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Network -> DNS Client -> “Allow DNS Suffix Appending to Unqualified Multi-Label Name Queries”

WSUS troubleshooting

This artilcle is in english to be useful to more people.

I've spent some time to setup wsus on my environment and other time to maintain that and to approve the updates but oftent I saw client that are not loggin on the wsus server.
Here you can find some useful workaround:

Situation: - There's a group policy that sets WSUS on the clients (not mandatory, you can use also a script see: http://msmvps.com/blogs/athif/pages/Manually-Configure-WUA.aspx)
- My wsus have a DNS alias that points on the correct server (just for future upgrades, this avoid change group policy or settings on the clients)

To be sure that your client is receiving properly updates:
1. check if your client receive the correct policy, with group policy result wizard or directly on the client looking the content of this registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate
you should see this two values:

"WUServer"="http://YOUR-WSUS-SERVER"
"WUStatusServer"="
http://YOUR-WSUS-SERVER"

 2. Check if dns resolution works correctly:
nslookup YOUR-WSUS-SERVER<.name.local>

3. Chek with internet explorer if you can access the wsus website with the address on the key in point 1

At this point all should work and if you use wuauclt /detectnow after some time you should see the client registered on wsus server and probably some updates needed.

If the client still not connect to the server use the WSUS client diagnostic tool: http://download.microsoft.com/download/9/7/6/976d1084-d2fd-45a1-8c27-a467c768d8ef/WSUS%20Client%20Diagnostic%20Tool.EXE
(see other tools here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/windowsserver/bb466192.aspx)

Run the client in a command window and see if all the test are: PASSED
If not look at the Winhttp proxy setting section and see if there's a proxy defined here.

In my case was as: (you can read) "proxy:" and then "avoid proxy for 192.168.1.25"

This lines was the ones that avoid access to WSUS, the local system account is using the string as a proxy and the server is not in the "avoid proxy list".

use the command proxycfg  to see which is the configuration and eventually use: proxycfg -d to go diretct or proxycfg -p to set parameters correctly.

This worked for me like a charm.

IIS 6 e Windows 2008 UPN authentication

w32tm /config /manualpeerlist: /reliable:yes

poi riavviare il servizio ntp:
sc stop w32time
sc start w32time

Stop Java Update

The command line to disable UAC is:
C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe /k %windir%\System32\reg.exe ADD HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System /v EnableLUA /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f

To enable it, the command line is:
C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe /k %windir%\System32\reg.exe ADD HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System /v EnableLUA /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f
